Beginning Guitar Lessons Made Easy

By Jordan Weckstrom

It's true! You can take easy guitar lessons online - without spending a penny. These four simple lessons will help you learn how to play the guitar in no time.

Easy Guitar Lesson #1 - How to hold a guitar.

As you are sitting, the guitar will sit on your leg. You will use your dominant hand to strum, so the guitar body goes to the dominant side as well, with the non-dominant hand holding the guitar neck. Use the arm of your strumming hand to keep your guitar tucked close to your body. If your guitar slips off your leg, as often happens, be sure you haven't bent your back to look at your finger placement. This is a very common mistake, but it's best to nip those bad habits in the bud early on. So double check to make sure the guitar is close and straight.

Easy Guitar Lesson #2 - Getting to know the chord chart.

The first three chords you'll learn involve the first four guitar frets. (Frets are the spaces between the vertical metal bars on the neck of the guitar.) There are six strings on the guitar, and you'll number your fingers 1 through 3 starting with your index finger.

Easy Guitar Lesson #3 - The three most basic chords

The first chord on the roster is D. The first 2 fingers will be on the second fret. The first finger will be on the third string and the second finger will be on the first string. The third finger should be on the second string, third fret.

The next chord you will learn is E which is a great beginner chord. Position finger #1 on the third string, on the first fret. Fingers #2 and #3 go on the second fret. Place finger #2 on the fifth string and finger #3 on the fourth string.

Another easy chord to master is the A chord. Although there are various ways to play this chord, this is the most basic method. Place all three fingers on the second fret, with finger #3 on the second string, #2 on the third string and #1 on the fourth string.

Easy Guitar Lesson #4 - Changing chords and strumming

The first three chords will now enable you to play some tunes with one additional step which is the strumming. Strumming your guitar is a fundamental skill to be learned. It is done by moving your dominant hand up and down on the strings. Always keep your hands moving. Don't rush. Start slowly till you have strumming perfected. Start off slow then build up your speed gradually. The chords should ring out with no buzzing and only play the strings of that chord shown on the chord chart. On changing chords, master the basic cords. Set the beat. Change to the different chord before starting the next beat. To learn how to change chords and strum more effectively, practice on your favorite song with a slow beat.

These easy guitar lessons were designed to be a self-help tool for you. Enjoy playing guitar!
