A Black Belt's Guide To The Most Unforgettable Martial Arts Movies From The Last Decade

By Ronnie Stark

Any time I go over a list of martial arts films from the past decade, I have a very hard time narrowing the list down to a point that I'm happy with. But alas, there are a lot of people out there that need a recommendation when it comes to finding a great martial arts movie.

So without further ado, here is an attempt at the top 5 must see martial arts movies from 2000-2010.

I would be remiss to complete a list of martial arts movies from years past without giving a mention of a Matrix film. The original Matrix movie was released in 1999, but The Matrix: Reloaded hit theaters and is therefore eligible. Some mind bending stuff in this one.

Another film that must make any martial arts list, old school or not, is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This movie showed audiences a new level of special effects in martial arts film. Ang Lee pulled out all the stops with this one and helped reinvent the film genre.

If you are looking for an outside the box Jet Li movie to see, one that I highly recommend is Unleashed (also called Danny The Dog in the UK). The movie is directed by Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle.

Another great movie to watch if you are fan of these types of movies is Hero. Jet Li stars as a nameless warrior and this film is told in a very cool sequence. Jet Li tells flashbacks of various battles, in a manner similar to the great Kurosawa film, Rashomon.

Finally I have to include District B13. This film got overshadowed by the similarly named District 9, but they have nothing to do with each other. District B13 is a very fun watch, and showcases some amazing Parkour skills.

Hopefully there is a film on this list that you have yet to see and will add to your own list.
