Skid Row Albums - The Band's Rise To The Top

By Missy Ray

This American heavy metal band was formed in 1986 in Toms River in New Jersey. With five full-length Skid Row albums to date, and having sold over 20 million copies, the band is definitely at the forefront of the heavy metal music scene. Unlike most bands, it took them only three years to finally release their debut album 'Skid Row'. They are most successful during the late 1980s and the early 1990s.

It was Dave "The Snake" Sabo and Rachel Bolan who started the band. Through the years there have been some changes in the line up with the most famous of their former members was Sebastian Bach who was their vocalist back then. Sebastian's departure happened when he tried to get the band to open for KISS. The other members did not like the idea and said that they are too big to be just an opening act. As a result, Sebastian left the band. Their current line up, aside from the two founders, are Rob Hammersmith, Scotti Hill, and Johnny Solinger.

Back when they were still starting out, they signed a great percentage of their publishing rights to the Underground Music Company of Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. This became quite a problem for the two camps as the band slowly gained popularity. After some pressure from the band and also from the transaction getting exposed to the media, a percentage of the rights was returned to the group.

Their debut album, 'Skid Row', was released on the 24th of January, 1989. The album was been given the platinum record five times by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Impressively for a first album, it was able to rank no. 6 in the Billboard 200. Because of their new found popularity, a lot of fans started to look for some Skid Row merch and other items.

On June 11, 1991 the band released their second album, titled 'Slave to the Grind'. It can be considered a success for the band because it was their first and only album so far to debut in the number 1 slot of the Billboard 200. It was also a bit of a change in their musical style as it featured more profound lyrics that dealt with the social situations of the time.

'Subhuman Race' is the third of the Skid Row albums and was released on March 28, 1995. It was the last album in which Sebastian Bach recorded with the band. The album was notable for the shift in the band's sound from pure heavy metal to more of an alternative metal sound.

About a decade since 'Subhuman Race' was released, their next album, 'Thickskin', was launched. This time it featured the voice of Johnny Solinger, the band's new lead vocalist. However, another member had also left. It was Phil Varone.

'Revolutions per Minute' is the latest of their albums and it was released on October 24, 2006. The album received negative reviews from the music critics. It reunited the band with Michael Wagener who produced their second album, 'Slave to the Grind', which was about 15 years to that day.

These Skid Row albums, although not all experienced great acceptance and kind words from the critics, still helped the band achieve the popularity they are enjoying today. Their studio albums and band merch are continuously in great demand by their fans who want to have a piece of a great American heavy metal band.
