The Social And Political Comedy Of Richard Overton

By Nanette Dejesus

Nancy and Hall stood witness to the birth of their son who would be one of America's brilliant comedians as well as writers and actors. Richard Overton, a boy who grew up in New Jersey got his first chance on the big screen in 1982 when he played the role of Dr. Thurman in Young Doctors In Love. He also had roles in The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne and fantasy film Willow.

From 1992 to 1993, he was casted in The Edge which is FOX channel's sketch comedy show. He also had a role in Mrs. Doubtfire in the latter part of 1993. His appearances in numerous TV shows like Joan of Arcadia, NYPD Blue, Alias and the recent Lost have been recognized too.

To focus on his career as a film and TV personality would be an incomplete account of his life though. Overton has also been involved with screenwriting, and in fact has won an Emmy in 1996 for an episode he wrote on HBO's Dennis Miller Live. He wrote 20 episodes for the show in total.

Aside from the Emmy, the actor-writer also received nominations from the Writers Guild of America for his writings on variety and comedy programs. In fact, his love for witty comedy has led him to join Dan Dion and Paul Provenza in their show, also on hardcover, Satiristas.

Satiristas is a venue for brilliant comic people who possess the unflinching satirical voices of today. With the use of humor and satire, they uncover the most controversial social and political issues in the present society.

The actor's contribution to Satiristas cannot be overlooked. Along with other comedians, he helps expose the negative aspects of the society through the jokes he cracks. He can flawlessly touch on subjects like racism, social injustice and even environmental pollution to hopefully make changes.

Luckily, despite many controversies in the society, Richard Overton still has time to relax when he's not doing his job as a stand up comedian. He loves dogs but never has one. So, to be in a win-win situation, he strolls the local dog parks to visit all the dogs without having to pay for any. Read more about: richard overton
