Going Completely Wireless With Home Audio... Is It Possible?

By Dax Braxton

In the every changing world of electronics almost everything is moving in the direction of being wireless. Even home theater audio is trying to move in that direction. The only problem is how far can you really get down the wireless path with home audio. A major problem with wireless for home audio is that speakers need power in order to function. So can we ever get away from the wires? What is actually possible and what is not?

Wireless Electronics That Are Currently Possible?

It is currently possible to control your entire home theater experience wirelessly in the since of changing the movie, TV station, volume, which room has sound and so on. Not too long ago multi-room audio required you to go to a panel in wall in order to make changes. It is even possible to now control almost 100% of it through even a smart phone. On top of being able to control your home audio wirelessly there are even several speakers that will run wireless as well so you don't have to run speaker wire all over your home in order to have speakers in different locations but these speakers still require a power source to function which makes then not 100% wire free.

Things That Are Not Possible?

Because of the need for power it is difficult to remove all wires from speakers. There are a few different companies that make completely wireless speakers but they have to run off batteries and right now the best battery life you will get from one of these speakers in only a couple hours which makes then not a great solution for home theater. You need your speakers to at least make it through the entire movie before they die. They also make a wireless subwoofer but you will not find a single subwoofer that doesn't still need to be plugged into an outlet for power. With a subwoofer because they need so much power to run you will most likely never see a truly wireless subwoofer.

What Can We Expect In The Future?

As we head into the future you can plan on seeing many improvements in wireless technology. In the short future you should see more and more audio receivers that are controlled by your smart phones as well as I think you will start to see speakers that have battery life that will allow them to truly be wireless. Completely wireless subwoofers unfortunately will most likely not be a thing of the near future because of their need for high power consumption.

Even though there are options for wireless home audio right now none of them are a great solution but in the next 2-3 years expect to see true wireless home audio become a reality.
