By Esperanza Witt

The smallest island all the US Virgin islands is St. John. Sparkling shades of crystal blue sea nestled against sandy white beaches. Enjoy the flavors of Caribbean cuisine in many restaurants. Many talented artists call this place home. The St. John's art gallery boasts they have the finest galleries in the Caribbean.

The sense of calm and serenity is found as the central theme in some portrayed through the local artist works of art found in the local galleries. One such art space is Bajo el sol. This location has been on this isle since 1993. The site only has three rooms filled with local talent.

There is an artist who lives on their sailboat 6 months during the year and creates very ethereal paintings; another artist creates exquisite paintings and collages. You can also see unique and functional pieces taken from the human form and things found in nature.

Located in Wharfside Shopping Mall is the Galleria del Mar. Established in 1999, they feature one major artist who is known for his imaginative and inspiring still life paintings. This is just a hint of the creativity on the island.

In the past, this setting has won the best of the Virgin Islands award from 2006 to 2008. Check out the flowing pieces of art that are done by an incredible water colorist.
