Differences Between The Captain America Comic Book Outfit And The Captain America Film Costume

By David Lawson

If you're interested in creating your own Captain America movie costume it's important that you understand the differences between the movie version and the comic book version. For those interested in having their own costume here is some information about how they differ. Its vital to authenticity and continuity that the two not have components crisscrossed.

Shield

The most recognizable component of the outfit has always been the red, white, and blue shield. While later versions of the comic book use the same type of round shield that is seen in the movie, the original shield was a rounded diamond shape. For the film version a large disk shield is appropriate.

The Mask

Another major difference which is vital to take into consideration between the two versions is that of the headpiece. The version most often seen in the graphic novels is a full head covering cowl which extends down the back of the neck. In the film a more simplified version is depicted. This version is made of a military battle helmet covered in leather which extends down the top half of the face to form a mask. The movie version also does not have the iconic leather wings attached to the sides of the headpiece; rather they are painted onto the helmet.

Captain's Boots

An extremely important difference between the two versions of the costume is the boots. While in the graphic novels the character wears red spandex boots with flap over tops, the film character wears 32 lace brown leather military boots. In both versions the characters gloves match the material of the boots.

Pants

The pants are probably the most important consideration to keep in mind when choosing between the two versions of the uniform. For a man who's confident in his physique, and masculinity, the comic book version involves the wearing of bright blue leotard pants. For those who want to go with a slightly more macho appearance the movie version is probably best; in this version blue-gray military battle pants are used.

Body Armor

The most basic form of the captain's uniform top is not very different between the two versions. The comic book version is made of form fitting spandex with muscle-shaped armored plating underneath it. The version used in the film is a modified military uniform top which has heavy body armor worn beneath.

Add-ons

When it comes to accessories and weaponry it is very important that one remembers that the graphic novel version of the character never once possessed a gun. In the film however the character is seen wearing a thigh mounted leather holster and regularly using a side arm. In order to maintain authenticity between the two is vital that this key factor not be overlooked.

When preparing to put together or purchase your own Captain America film costume it's important that you keep the information presented here in mind. There are key differences between the two versions that must be adhered to carefully. Captain America has been a fan favorite for more than 60 years and now with your very own costume you can join the adventure.
