A Wi-Fi Tablet Examined: The Dell Streak 7

By Marcia Annala

When the iPad made its debut, many people said to themselves, "Whatever, I've got a laptop for that." Then people rapidly started to realize the real use of the iPad. As the marketplace caught on and Apple's accountants began rubbing their hands with glee, the other big computer and mobile phone companies sat up and took note. The iPad and other tablets became the current must-have. And Dell's shareowners will be distressed if they didn't try and obtain a piece of the market. That is the very reason they have come out with the Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet. We'll assess this unit in this article and give you the answers you need for you to decide if you should get or not.

It's a good device for movies with a similar system to watch movies for ipad. It's simpler to recommend a device when the company that manufactures it has a good reputation - that, however, is not the case with Dell. Quality and reliability are not trademarks of this company's products. And as for customer service: well, let's just put it this way: if Dell had a prize cupboard, it would not be filled with consumer recognitions. Based on customer feedback, it appears that once your warranty runs out, you are going to be charged for contacting customer support. So, while this device is probably going to be one of the more affordable tablets available the market, you need to pause to think about who you will be paying that money to.

Nowadays, multitasking between different functions is much in demand, and the Android OS version used here, referred to as Froyo, should make it fairly uncomplicated. It's not a requirement to keep specific applications "live" in order to get messages from the system's notification service, while at the same time listening to MP3s and keeping your GPS data up-to-date. Acquaintances and business contacts will always be able to get hold of you on your Streak 7 tablet because it gives you access to your email accounts, including Gmail, quite easily.

One of the great things about this Dell tablet that did not come with the initial iPad design is video chat. Video chat is built-in to this tablet by means of a front-facing panel cam and Qik software. The problem is , however, that you won't be able to communicate with people who don't use the same Streak 7 device, or something compatible. So video chatting with those who are using other platforms is not ensured. Another good thing is that the Dell Streak 7 table features Blockbuster's On Demand service. Of course, Blockbuster has been going through its own share of troubles of late so we aren't quite certain if this is really a selling point.

Reviews at this point are few, but it does look like a lot of people are leery as to the reasons why this tablet was introduced. The tablet's functionality is terribly limited through its inability to interact with devices that aren't compatible with it. But, if you think you're missing out and you wish to see whether tablets are truly the thing for you, this tablet is an affordable way for you to figure it out. Keeping in mind the earlier caveats, make sure you think about your purchase cautiously prior to committing any money.
