In relation to a vast number of musical instruments the saxophone is a relatively new style instrument. It was developed by Adolphe Sax in 1846. He himself played the flute and clarinet and was an instrument maker of note. He wanted to create an instrument that incorporated the brass instrument projection and the range of a woodwind. His dedication and skill led him to creating the first saxophones for sale.

By elimination he came up with the perfect combination and the saxophone as we know it was born. The instrument is made to encompass the full range of singing pitches. Even though most Saxes are nowadays mass produced there are still many well known music makers creating beautiful custom saxophone pieces.

No orchestra or brass band would be complete without this fine piece and a number of beautiful music pieces have been specifically written for it. Depending on its construction the saxophone is capable of playing at one octave lower than the full range from soprano to contrabass. In orchestras and bands it serves brings the woodwind section melodiously together with the brass section.

In the 1920's with the establishment of small intimate clubs and the great dance band era the saxophone become an integral part of new music styles known as jazz and blues. This style of music's popularity grew and with it the popularity of the sax. A sax's versatility allows for it to be played when classical music is produced as well as everyday country and rock songs.

Today one can find a wide selection of Saxes in music shops and online. Most often manufactured in polished brass they are also often seen either in nickel, silver or gold plate. For the beginner there are less expensive instruments readily available to learn on.

Many suppliers of fine instruments cater specifically for advanced and professional players and carry a wide range of vintage and endorsed pieces as well. All major companies manufacturing woodwind instruments annually produce these items in pitch ranges of alto, soprano baritone to cater for the full spectrum of the market.

For the purist and even the beginner there is sure to be a special instrument on the list of saxophones for sale. When people discuss this music genre names such as Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Fausto Papetti, Kenny G and even that of US Past President Bill Clinton will arise depending on which style of music one likes. Prices range according to the quality, history and make of each instrument.
