The Chronological Progress Of Burning Spear Discs

By Doris Rivas

Burning Spear discs will remain to be the best sold musical pieces within Jamaica, the country of origin, and across the entire world as a whole. Burning Spear goes by the name Winston Rodney. He is among the prominent reggae artists who have performed and produced several songs together albums. His music is characterized by social-political malpractices which normally occur in the society. He offers encouragement to his listeners and warns them to shun violence as a means of survival

His musical career began way back then when he met with the legendary Bob Marley. Bob Marley advised him to join a studio where he could be able to record songs. He joined hands with Rupert Willington with whom he produced an album named Door peep. When the album performed well in the market, he let Delroy Hinds join them as well. He later managed to release a chain of single tracks as the vocalist.

Rodney composed words in his music which were portrayed by deep emotions and anger. Some sense of holiness and inspiration could also be seen in them. Among his first songs included Zion Higher, Ethiopian live it out and We are free. His focus was directed at the oppression his race faced, religious devotion and literary theme of repatriation.

The three of them went ahead and released a song named Marcus Garvey which was later followed by Slavery days. The Marcus Garvey album turned out to be among the major hits ever to be produced in Jamaica. He was later contracted by another studio called Island label where he would continue to pursue his career. This move, however, outraged his group members.

He later came to set up his own label. This move was meant to maintain the position he had acquired in the industry. He did the track Traveling and followed it by Burning spear and then The Youth. Later in the seventies, he released man in the hills. This particular one was emphasizing on rural themes.

The group ended up breaking and by the time Winston was producing Dry and Heavy album, he was alone. This prompted him to contract his label to EMI. He then returned to the first studio and released Hail H. I. M. By this time, he was exploring other themes different from cultural ones. It was at this time that he produced she is mine.

Resistance as well as Fittest of the fittest were released. The former did better in terms of reception than the former. This earned it the desirable Grammy nomination. When he later got signed to Slash label, he produced People of the world, whose performance was similar to that of Resistance. However, Mistress, which was done in the 1980s was poorly received by his fans. He had to compensate for that by releasing Live in Paris during the same period.

The return from a European tour saw him contracted with Island brand. He then opened an account together with Mek We Dweet. His performance was now roots oriented reggae music. The world should know and Jah Kingdom were some of the albums in Burning Spear discs that were released in early 1990s. He received the Grammy award for the latter. He was now singing real life occurrences in his music.
