How Grease Made Leather Jackets Cool

By Krissy Malone

Since its release in the seventies, Grease has remained a popular film. John Travolta, who played the main male character Danny, was idolized by men across the world, and female fans yearned to look like Olivia Newton-John, who played the female lead Sandy. The film was watched by people of all ages and has been loved for decades.

Featuring numerous songs and dances, the soundtrack was almost as popular as the film itself. 'Summer Loving' and the hip-shaking 'You're the One that I Want' were some of Grease's most popular tunes. Olivia Newton-John continued to release her own music for years after the film was released, thanks to the recognition her vocal talent gained.

Popular for the music that features in the film, Grease was also famous for the characters' wardrobes. The film introduced leather jackets to both male and female fashion shops, thanks to the well-known song 'Grease Lightning', leather jackets became popular and sold out rapidly during the 1970s.

In the film Grease, the group of male characters were called T-Birds. Their signature look, which was copied by Grease fans, was a leather jacket with 'T-Bird' written on the back of them. Fans everywhere were eager to get their hands on a leather jacket when the film was released, so that they too could look like a 'T Bird'.

Up until the very end of the film, the character Sandy, who is played by Olivia Newton-John, dresses in plain clothes. In the final scene, she enters wearing skin-tight black trousers and a leather jacket that matches John Travolta's, who plays Danny. Her complete transformation was a huge hit with fans of the film. As a result, fans were eager to get their hands on a jacket in a similar style. People everywhere wanted a leather jacket and the shops on the high street began making their own leather jackets after Grease was released.
