How to Bind a M-Audio MIDI to Your Laptop for Playing Music

By Andy Ainsworth

These days, it's simple for just about everybody to install a home-grown recording studio with just a few bits of equipment. Providing you have an operating pc, some variety of instrument, and a MIDI controller you can rock out. Here are the steps to connecting an M-Audio MIDI to your Notebook or Mac so you can craft and record songs.

You'll have to link an audio interface to your laptop. This is the gadget that you'll plug your instruments into. You can purchase one of these online or at a music or electronics store. Even Craigslist should have a few.

Connect your M-Audio MIDI keyboard or other machine to the computer audio interface. Just ensure it's attached to the right port or it won't work.

After that, link up your instruments to the interface. You'll probably see something that says "Input" or "Audio In" above the port for the instruments.

Linkup your speakers using the output ports on the interface. These can be any sort of speakers they don't have to be massive.

If you're going to record your guitar with the MIDI, you'll need to go along with a few steps to ensure everything is set up suitably. Here's how to get set up for recording:

Plug in an instrument cord to your guitar, and after that plug in the other end to the keyboard's interface board

Open up your recording application whatever it is-and get going on recording a track. Now, you should be able to listen to the sound of the guitar coming through on the MIDI

Basically hit the record knob on your computer and commence singing.

Use the MIDI to append other instrumental sounds if needed

Then you should be set to rock out. Ensure your sound levels are adjusted properly so you don't whack your eardrums out! You can use the M-Audio MIDI keyboard to transfer notes from the instrument to the pc. You will be able to produce all kinds of great sound effects once you understand how to navigate your MIDI mechanism. Have fun playing and do not be frightened to evaluate different things.
