Fender Guitar Cases Buying Guide

By Rand McCartney

Fender guitar cases generally come in 3 different forms. (Although there was that strange one my cousin Earl jerry-rigged.) Fender Gig Bags, Fender Soft Shell Cases and Fender Hard Shell Cases.

Here's a breakdown of what each one entails, and tips on how to find a Fender guitar case that'll keep your strat or telly good as new.

Case No.1: When Soft is a Good Thing

Gig bags used to be ratty old things that wouldn't protect a car fender, let alone the best guitar in the entire world. Today Fender gig bags are made of much sturdier stuff and can go a long way toward protecting your Fender guitar in transport.

Still when picking a gig bag it's important to look at the seams of the bag. Are tehy double-stitched? Are they rolled? Making sure they are double-stitched will ensure moisture stays out-and are a good preditor for reliablility.

Another Fender gig bag key is how much storage does it offer? I know you think you'll just need something for your picks and capo and some minor gear, but yo'ud be surprised at how big sheet music/notebooks can get. Get as many storage pockets as you think you'll need in the future.

Case No.2: Middle Road

If you need to be portable, but want more protection thatn a gig bag will give you, then you will want to look at a soft shell case.

Why? Well...the padding in a gig bag can't compare to the rigid frame of a soft shell case made from plastic molds. This protects your Fender guitar from any dings and scratches you might pick up along the way.

Also inside soft shell cases you'll find a foam interior--which protects the most important part of your guitar...the neck. Almost anything else can get repaired easily--but not the neck.

Case No.3: Go Hard or Go Home

If you need some serious armor for your guitar than a hard shell Fender guitar case is the way to go.

A good guideline to think about: if you're traveling and can't see your guitar, such as on an airplane then you'll want to go with a hard shell case.

While they are a bit on the heavy side, just remember that weight is protecting your guitar. And that's what's most important.
