By Grant Ceville

The Cayman Islands' beautiful island atmosphere has been drawing tourists to its shores for years. Anyone who has ever visited would not be surprised to learn that Hollywood has taken notice and used the islands' beaches and beautiful oceans as locations for a number of films. Films in nearly every genre from suspense to comedy have used the Cayman Islands as the back drop of their stories.

During the filming of the blockbuster film The Firm, which was based on a novel by famous author John Grisham, loads of Hollywood A-listers flocked to the islands to shoot scenes for the film. The film stared actors Tom Cruise, Ed Harris, Gene Hackman and actresses Holly Hunter and Jeanne Tripplehorn. The film was directed by Sydney Pollack and delighted audiences who were greatly anticipating the film release of the critically acclaimed novel. The film was released by Paramount Pictures on June 30, 1993. Since that time the film has made $270,248,367 at the box office more than enough to recoup the 42 million dollar budget.

The Haven staring Orlando Bloom and Bill Paxton is a feature film that was released in 2004. The film was set in the Cayman Islands. The film was part of the Toronto International Film Festival and had only limited release in the United States. The Films tagline "Can love survive the fall of paradise?" alludes to the films plot that revolves around several different characters whose paths all cross because of unusual group of events and tragedies. The combination crime drama and espionage film involves several shady characters and the FBI. The films picturesque setting is an eerie backdrop for this suspenseful movie.

The film into the blue tells the tale of a young couple living in the islands whose friends come to visit from New York. The couples set out on a snorkeling expedition and come across items that appear to have come from a ship wreck. After further investigation the couples identify the items as relics from a famous French pirate ship. The rumors surrounding this ship tell of millions of dollars in gold lost at the bottom of the sea. After finding out that one of the friends is in dept to a dangerous loan shark. The group soon becomes entangled in a dangerous drug plot and none of them is sure they can trust the others. In this film again the suspense created in the story playing out in such a beautiful location adds to the drama.

Directors of film dramas are not the only ones who have found the Cayman Islands to be the perfect location for their films. The island addition to the popular National Lampoon's series was filmed on the shores and in the waters of the Cayman Islands. National Lampoon's Last Resort includes the famous Coreys. Cory Feldman and Corey Haim head up the cast of comedy actors in this campy classic. The Cayman Islands beauty and tranquil setting will continue to attract film makers as long as movies are being made.
