UK Festivals - Get the Lowdown

By Elizabeth H Warrington

The summer is here and to music lovers that means only one thing - festival season! It appears that almost every year, a new name pops up on the festival circuit. And that can only be a good thing surely, who wouldn't enjoy a good old-fashioned knees up after a long cold winter? Brits are spoilt for choice, with festivals catering for every musical taste. Weather you're a die-hard metal fan or a techno junkie, Britain has it covered. It can be difficult however, to know which festival(s) to go to.

The first festival we feel we should tell you about is Rockness, aptly named because of it's location on the shore of Loch Ness, just outside Inverness, deep in the Scottish wilderness. The festival takes place in June, at the beginning of the festival calendar and with acts such as Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers gracing the stages in years gone by, they really know how to put on a party. If you're lucky, you may get a glimpse of Nessy!

For the rock and metal fans out there, you should definitely make the effort to experience the Leeds and Reading festival. Located in Bramham Park in Leeds and Richfield Avenue in Reading, these festivals take place simultaneously with the same line-ups. Wherever you are in the country, choose your closest location and head on down to the mosh pit!

The mother of all music festivals and one of the most famous in the world has to be Glastonbury. Taking place on farmland in Somerset, Glastonbury has evolved from a modest hippy, free love festival back in 1970 to a 135,000 capacity extravaganza attracting some of the biggest names in Music. People say that Glastonbury should be experienced at least once in your lifetime, and we agree!

One of the last events in the summer festival calendar takes place on the Isle of White. Bestival is the big brother of Rob Da Bank's weekly club night 'Sunday Best'. The award winning festival has been going strong since 2004 and grows in size every year, in terms of attendance and performers. Every year has a different theme and a fancy dress in accordance with that theme. Be sure to take your waterproofs as this takes place in September, there is always the chance of rain.
