Learning How To Play The Guitar

By Jack Wogan

People learn how to play an instrument hopping that one day they will be able to play music by ear and make their own songs. Others do not even take the first step because they are sure they have no talent. What they do not realize is that being able to play music by ear is a learned skill as much as driving a car is. If you do not know how to do it, then it sounds difficult but after you practice you come to the conclusion that it is not as hard as you first thought.

You cannot play the guitar with just one hand so you must learn to control and synchronize both your hands. Fine control over your left fingers is a must as those fingers have to move naturally over the fret board in order to press the correct strings on the right frets. It will take a lot of practice but you will get better and better every day. Playing chords on an acoustic guitar is more difficult than on an electric guitar because it requires more strength from the fingers as the strings are thicker. For this reason, learning how to play an electric guitar is considered easier.

It is easier to learn to play by ear if you can play clean notes on your guitar. It is important that you learn right from the start the correct technique that will help you play those clean notes. The more you practice the more you will improve on your technique and will recognize those notes more easily.

Beginner players spend most of their time concentrating on where to put their fingers on the fret board and they might not hear if the notes they play are not clean. Recording the notes can help finding and eliminating any unwanted noise that occurs while playing the guitar. Make sure you play it at a slower speed so you can better listen what you played. This way you will catch the unwanted noise and you will be able to correct the problem.

It will not happen after a few days but eventually you will be able to recognize the notes and chords you hear. It will take a lot of practice before you are capable of playing songs by ear. From there, playing songs you created is just a small step.
