What's in Store

By Alexis Wright

When I was in grade school, there was a day when we were supposed to wear something we thought would be popular in the future. There was one kid who wore tinfoil. It's excusable for a kid that age to think that look is futuristic, but I think most of us knew it wasn't going to catch on.

I also recall a little predicting that we would be going to school and communicating with the teachers via monitors and cameras by the year 2000. It's really funny to think of how kids perceive things to be. It's funny to think of how adults perceive the future as well. Just look at the movies from about 20 or 30 years ago.

Back to Future predicted we'd have flying cars and those cool hover boards. The characters in that movie's identification could be found in their thumbprints. All this was supposed to happen in the year 2015. It's crazy to think of that year only being four years away.

Recently for the first time in years, I watched Rocky 4. I completely forgot about Paulie's robot. It was so out of place. The movie wasn't exactly futuristic, but the robot just didn't didn't seem like it belonged there.

Robots were popular in 80s movies, but I'm not sure if it was a prediction. If so, talk about way off. When was the last time you were at a friend's house and there was a robot serving you food and drinks? As great as that would be, it's never going to happen.

The funny thing about it is that in all the movie predictions of what the future might be like, I can't recall of a single one that goes in depth with the internet, and it's such a big part of our lives and will be in the future. Why would we go without it?

If I were to make a prediction, I wouldn't predict flying cars or robots. The prediction would have something to do with the internet since it will be around for a long time to come.
