Folk Music Produces Great Live Acts

By Karen Jones

Music with soul moves people and when people venture out to see live music, they want to be moved. Folk music comes from the soul, it is the music of poor working class people who sang to describe stories of their people and traditions and who entertained each other through a love of music and song. They sang from the heart and nothing is louder than the heart in music.

This old fashioned sentiment is captured perfectly in live folk shows around the country. It is rare you will find a folk band young or old that isn't captivating with their stage prowess.

Folk music is a great way to hear unusual instruments and melodies that are not often used in other contemporary music genres. These instruments vary but are usually ancient or traditional style wind and string instruments that give a distinct sound to the folk style being showcased.

Most of the time folk music is performed at festivals or at small venues. A lot of the time there is no stage with the band playing in amongst the audience giving the whole experience a uniquely intimate feel. A lot of these small venues are pubs, so it is possible to enjoy a drink whilst listening to your favourite folk band.

Recently folk bands, in particular UK bands, have begun touring with traditional dance troupes. The sound of the dancers dancing adds another layer of rhythm and energy to the music being performed. The best example of this is The Demon Barbers who have used traditional clog dancing in this way.

No matter what your background or your current musical tastes you will love live folk music. It is very different, but genuinely appeals to everyone so give it a go.
