By Kevin Fernandez

Waheeda Rehman enacts different roles with perfection and is a great performer. She is considered to be one of the most famous movie stars of the Indian Film industry. She hails from a conventional Muslim family, which resided in Chengalpattu, a city in Tamil Nadu.

She started doing films in a span which was the golden age of Bollywood and without fail she created an area with her great performance. Though she wished to follow a profession as a doctor, she could not do so due to her bad health. Nevertheless, Waheeda Rehman was trained as a classical dancer in Bharatanatyam. With the support of her parents, she started acting in films in Chennai, where she did about four movies. She performed a folk dance in the film Rojulu Maravi and it was liked by the masses.

While she was basking in the glory of her success in Hyderabad, she was chosen by Guru Dutt to play a role of a vamp in his movie CID. When this movie became commercially successful, Waheeda Rehman was roped in for the lead role in Pyaasa (1957). After Kaagaz Ke Phool got released, she maintained a distance from Guru Dutt, director, as they both were usually linked together.

However, with the release of Chaudhvin Ka Chand in 1960, both came together again. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was another film which saw Waheeda and Guru Dutt together. This film was not appreciated well in the Berlin Film Festival.

She continued acting in several successful films directed by a lot of well known directors, even after Guru Dutt passed away. Her role in Guide, won her rave reviews and the Filmfare Award for best actress. The 1968 movie Neel Kamal too was a major success. She went on to win the National Award for her sensational performance in Reshma Aur Shera. But, a few of the films did not do well. She then married Kamaljit, her co-star in Shagun, and was blessed with two children Sohail and Kashvi.

After a long gap of twelve years, Waheeda Rehman started acting when she shifted to Mumbai after the death of Kamaljit. This time she played the elderly roles as mother or grandmother. Rang De Basanti, Om Jai Jagdish, Water and Delhi 6 are a few of her films which got good reception.

She took part in a discussion which was about her successful movies in Waheeda Rehman movie screening. Though her most of her fans still think about Khamoshi as her most successful movie, there are a lot of others who can never forget her graceful performance in other films such as Teesri Kasam, Guide and Pyaasa.
