Information On Abstract Watercolor Painting

By Celia Hall

The pairing of watercolor and abstract art is known as abstract watercolor painting. Abstraction in art is not designed to represent the recognizable or external realities of the world. Though it does strive to create its own visual language through use of textures, colors, forms and shapes. Watercolor is a form of painting that creates luminous and transparent designs because pigment that is used has very little fillers that obscure the pigment colors.

The materials needed are relatively inexpensive. To create this type of art, you will need to have a pencil, paint, paper that is compatible with the paint, brushes and of course, time. As is true of most pieces of art, some thought and time will go into developing each piece of work. All types of artists do this kind of painting, from students just learning the craft to seasoned professionals who have done this type of work for years.

One assumption of art with abstraction is that anything goes. Although this is true of most any art form, it is best for artists interested in this form to learn about the method and techniques. Visually, the elements of these art pieces include one or more of: pattern, form, line, color, shape and texture.

Abstract is known to have the reality removed from the imagery of a piece. This may be a complete, slight or partial removal depending on the style of the artist. Most of these works are versatile. That is, the finished piece can be presented in different angles and still look like a piece of art.

There are numerous techniques applied with this kind of work. The style is know to be demanding for most artists. Unlike paints that are acrylic or oil based, this medium does not always remain where it is originally place. It can also take more time to dry and may require application of more paint. These are results of water used with the paint.

One of the major difficulties associated with this medium is being able to anticipate the water behavior, instead of trying to control how it behaves. Some techniques that are commonly used with this medium: washes and glazes, wet in wet, mixing and dilution of paints, minimal palettes, drybrush and paint lightfastness. All of these strategies are known to alter the pigmentation and can simplify and control the process.

Watercolor painting dates back centuries. The old art is seen in the cave paintings of Paleolithic Europe. In the past, Baroque easel artists mostly used this medium for copies, sketches and cartoons. With time, the medium evolved and became more popular. Nowadays, the paints that are used are just as durable and pigmented as oil and acrylic types. Abstract art also has a rich history, which began with mostly geometric, simple and linear forms.

Abstract watercolor painting includes the use of watercolor for a medium and abstract art as the form. Artists with all experience levels do this kind of work. To master the craft, artists should learn the basics and how to effectively work with the medium. As is true of most artwork, thought and time go into the process.
