At the end of the sixteenth century, William Shakespeare wrote a tragedy about two young people. Since then millions of theater and film audiences have shed tears at the fate of the 'star-cross'd lovers'. The Romeo and Juliet new movie is set for release in 2013, so you can see this story, which has become probably the most famous loves story in the world.
William Shakespeare's play was first published in 1597. It was one of his earlier works, yet it has been one of the most enduring. He based it on an Italian story from earlier in the sixteenth century and kept the setting in Italy.
The play tells the tale of two families in Verona, a city in northern Italy. The Montagues and Capulets have been adversaries for years. One night Romeo, a Montague, sneaks into a ball held by the Capulets. There he meets Juliet. It is love at first sight for both. Knowing that their families will never approve of their union, they secretly go to a priest the next day and get married.
Juliet's cousin Tybalt, mad at the hero for gatecrashing the party, wants to fight him in a duel. The hero's friend Mercutio accepts the challenge on his behalf and fights Tybault. However, he is killed. Romeo kills Tybault and has to leave Verona.
The House of Capulet decided that Juliet should marry somebody else, not knowing about her recent marriage to the exiled hero. She goes to the priest who helped them get married and begs for help. The priest gives her a potion that will make her fall into a coma-like sleep so that everybody will think she has died. He tries to inform the hero of this plan, but the message never reaches its intended recipient. The exiled hero is told that his wife is dead and, believing this, he goes to where her body lies and drinks poison that kills him. The heroine wakes up, sees her love's dead body and stabs herself in her grief.
There have been several film versions of the play. The story was also the inspiration for musicals like 'West Side Story' and many other films have referred to it in some way in their plot, including the award-winning 'Shakespeare in Love'. The latest version, to be released in 2013, is directed by the Italian director Carlo Carlei.
Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld will play the title characters. British model and actor Booth got chosen from three hundred hopefuls to play the role last portrayed in a significant movie by a young Leonardo DiCaprio. Steinfeld, who was nominated for several awards, including an Academy Award for her performance in 'True Grit', is the latest in a series of actresses of note who played the heroine in film. They include Norma Shearer and Claire Danes.
Experienced and respected actors like Stellan Skarsgard, Lesley Manville and Natascha McElhone will star in the film too. Ed Westwick from 'Gossip Girl' plays the part of Tybault. Set for release in February 2013, the Romeo and Juliet new movie is one you shouldn't miss. It is the perfect movie to take your date to.
