The Importance Of Post Production Music

By Chloe Gib

When working in the film and entertainment industry, there are many different areas in which an individual can become employed. One of these is that of post production music engineer. Whereas, another is working as a Foley artist doing sound effects. Of course, when experienced with voice-overs, individuals can often find work at a number of different studios and times during the production process.

Still, for those desiring to do engineering or Foley work, the adding of human sound effects during production, there are a great many opportunities. Although, it is important to take the right classes and obtain a degree if possible. Of course, when one has skills and experience in any given area, generally a college degree does not matter as much as otherwise.

In addition, other elements include voice-overs, music and Foley work, all of which are also added during this phase. So, regardless of the project, most often these elements are added shortly before completion. Of course, as with all recordings, there are often additional editing requirements before distributing a final release.

In addition, when working with animation, it is important that the dialogue is injected at the right point and time. Of course, this is the case with most films. However, it can often be more difficult to edit sound in animated films and shows than in others.

Although, there may also be times when creating various sound bites before project completion is possible. Of course, whether or not it is possible to synch the sound with video is something that cannot be known until after production is complete. So, most often it is simpler to have actors do voice-overs rather than take the chance.

However, it is important that when doing so, the individual ask someone in the industry who can provide accurate and complete information. Of course, when it comes to providing suggestions, whether or not a studio, director or producer incorporates the idea into the project is a different story, still it never hurts to try. So, generally when individuals working on a project have questions or ideas, the studios are both eager to hear the ideas as well as answer any questions the individual may have about the project.

To this end, the importance of post production music in film and television is often overlooked. However, television, cinema and sound would all most likely be far less enjoyable without the addition of dialogue and sound effects by actors and Foley artists. Although, with the advancement of technology, it is now possible to create sound and video on a computer, which has already saved studios a great deal of money.
