Robert De Niro Is The Man Of Many Faces Each Wonderfully Believable

By Pille Ardberg

There is a menacing charm about Robert De Niro that draws yet scares people which he is able to accentuate in his bad boy roles. Globally he is admired by men and swooned over by adoring female fans who find him and the many roles he plays excitingly dangerous and alluring. He brings a dimension to cruel characters that few other actors are capable of emulating. They are brought to life with diabolical genius and the audience just knows these men are capable of anything.

Even in a comedy role his totally neurotic bad guy still had a believable menacing presence in 'Analyze This'. This ability to take on a variety of characters may be attributed to his interesting family mix. Strong Italian and Irish genes with their volatile charm are combined with stern German and English correctness to form a man who can draw on a widely diverse range.

Born to parents who were artistic and excelled at talents ranging from painting to writing poetry he was destined to follow a career connected to the arts. His commitment to acting was made at the age of 10 when he was cast as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Basically shy by nature he discovered a freedom in acting that was gratifying and enriching.

With roles in Mean Streets as well as Bang the Drum Slowly he made his debut and started on an acting career that is filled with great movies, many awards and accolades. In 1974 his portrayal in the second film in the Godfather series as Vito in his youth gained him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar and a Bafta Best Newcomer nomination. His role in Taxi Driver and a subsequent Best Actor Oscar and another Bafta nomination firmly stamped his mark in the acting world. He was considered second to none when it came to playing bad scary guys.

His versatility is another strong point. He has an almost chameleon like ability to change from a seriously bad guy to a hysterically funny character with ease. De Niro plays both of these arch types to perfection to the delight of his adoring audience.

When asked about his strengths a person thinks of a man who has firm and steadfast belief in his own acting ability. His staunch belief to branch out and play roles totally contrasting to what he made his name in underlines this belief.

With A Bronx Tale and The Good Shepherd he tried his hand at directing with success. He played in both these movies and his performance on either side of the camera showed that he was a master both these art forms.

Ultimately his commitment makes him a superstar. He gained excessive weight and learnt to box for Ranging Bull, he worked as a taxi driver for that role and learnt to play the saxophone for New York, New York. Robert De Niro will do anything to ensure that he and his fellow actors give 100% to their roles even if it requires slinging insults at them.
