How to record music on a budget

By Joe Mansfield

If you've an interest in at home recording it is an exciting time! If you look back just a few years the only real options open to you to record music from your own home was a portable 4 track casette recorder.

Tascam led the way and revolutionised the home recording industry by releasing the Tascam Portastudio. The Portastudio was a 4 track cassette recorder with mixing desk. You could buy one nearly 15 years ago for approximately $400. They can still be obtained today and have been updated but not quite as much as you might assume.

The portable 4 tracks were brilliant for their time and gave the amateur songwriter an opportunity to record ideas very quickly. You could even record a demo for your group if you were prepared to invest a little more time. You could even bounce down tracks and use more than the standard 4 tracks at your disposal. To do this meant committing to the tracks you were going to bounce as there was no option to revert back and make changes once finished.

You may be thinking 4 tracks sound limiting and you would be right but you may not be aware one of the most noteworthy musical acts in history the Beatles only migrated to an eight track recording environment for their ninth studio album (the white album). For those that are interested this meant the groundbreaking Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was recorded on a 4 track.

Compare that to the digital choices we have currently available that allow you not only to record high quality audio and also make your own beats. You can easily acquire software for less than $100 in a lot of instances. It's even considered a comparatively simple task to burn your own compact disc and produce top quality cover art to truly have a quality product. Not to mention being able to make a clip and post to a video sharing network for anyone to see.
