How to setup your soundbars subwoofer

By Bob Jones

So, you've done your homework and bought the best Soundbar for you. Fantastic. You fire it up and start watching a film and all sounds great until that tank rolls onto screen, your teeth start vibrating and the neighbors start banging on the wall.

The situation could be that your particular subwoofers bass level is set too high and may also not be placed properly. The very first thing to undertake is always to go through your Soundbars handbook plus check out that it really is attached correctly and that you already went through any on-screen startup operations.

Now set the sound level in the Subwoofer to bare minimum and put on a superior bassy CD. Slowly and gradually push the volume upwards until you can hear it but, not so much that you will be concious of the Sub woofer as the source of the music.

Location wise you've got a number of alternatives - a corner generally is very effective however this could rely upon the range of your wireless or cable link. It can possibly create far too much bass so be careful!

If your Bass speaker is wi-fi be sure you ensure that is stays no less than 2m from any other wi-fi systems. (Phones, Network). Also remember that few subs are magnetically shielded so may well interfere or harm PCs or displays if put too close.

If you're serious about getting the best possible sound then try this: Place the subwoofer in your normal listening position. Get a CD with plenty of bass playing, or better yet a repeating sample of music. Now slowly crawl around the room and note the locations where it sounds best. If one of the locations is suitable for the sub to be positioned in then move the Sub to that location and see how that now sounds from your main listening position. You may need to repeat a couple of times to find the best spot that gives a practical location for the sub and the best sound. You also need to remember that there are limits on how far from the Soundbar the sub will be able to go. This will depend on make, model and whether the connection is wired or wireless.
