Gear Up For A First Music Lesson

By Adriana Noton

When you book your first music lesson you are opening a window into a whole new world of possibilities. Whether you are starting a new instrument or learning how to sing, there are always great achievements ahead. Learning to play and instrument or sing is one of the timeliest ways to spend your time. Children and adults can gain many skills when they start down this path.

Since there are no age requirements when it comes to learning how to play an instrument, all you really need is the desire, a good teacher, and the commitment to practice time. Your practice schedule should be daily and often reflects an hour for every scheduled session. This helps you master the new material so that you do not have to repeat it the next time you meet.

Each instructor will have their own set of preferences. Basically, you are likely to spend one hour practicing for every lesson. If you meet with your teacher once per week then you will be practicing about an hour every day. If you have two times every week that you meet with your teacher then you can expect to have two hours of daily practice. This is to ensure that the material you are learning registers and allows you to move ahead.

An instrument, including your voice, requires you to make a commitment to the process of learning if you do not wish to end up frustrated. Those who dedicate practice time end up with skills that they are proud of and enjoy. If you enjoy the idea of being able to make great sounds you simply start with the beginning and work your way through from there. This is, of course, where every great musician starts.

A high quality instructor will be dedicated to making sure that you will have very sound foundational skills. These basics are the most important part of learning how to play any instrument. Musical skill requires a commitment even when you have a natural talent. The more your instructor insists that you have learned the basics before allowing you to proceed the better you will be. If you have a high quality teacher you will be able to trust the guidance that is offered and take it on as your responsibility to make sure you follow through.

Beginners are often anxious to play the tunes that inspired them to pick up an instrument in the first place. While it can initially seem like it takes a long time to work toward that goal, once you have the basics completely down the process of moving forward will actually go much faster.

Combining the skills of a great teacher and the committed practice time you need is an excellent recipe for success. The more you want to be proficient at an instrument, the easier it is to schedule the practice time and follow through with your intentions.

Remember that you should be setting your musical endeavor up for success from your first music lesson and beyond. Ask questions to make sure you know you understand assignments, always be on time and ready to play, and practice when you get home. You can enjoy the great benefits of learning to play an instrument provided you are able to remain dedicated to the learning process.
