Early period of Hindi cinema saw Nargis, Meena Kumari, Nutan, Madhubala, Waheeda Rehman and Mala Sinha, making their presence felt strongly in the movie industry and enjoying a huge fan following.

Each decade in Bollywood saw charming actresses like Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore, Helen and Mumtaz showing off their acting skill. When new wave cinema got popular, actresses with a strong mindset like Deepti Naval, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Jaya Bhaduri outperformed a lot of of the actors of the same time. Parveen Babi and Zeenat Aman easily performed characters of sensuous women and rebelling youth in those times, which was against society's traditions. Later on actresses became an inseparable part of films and each films became complete only with them.

Bollywood was ruled by Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon, Sridevi, Karishma Kapoor, Kajol and Juhi Chawla from the '80s to the '90s. Several hit song sequences in films show actresses, proving that they can't be ignored in any way.
