The Reanimation Of The 3D Film Agenda In The Twenty-First Century

By Natalie R. Retana

The 3D film has been a part of the American film industry since the early middle of the twentieth century in one way or another. Everyone from children to adults were wearing the old red and blue spectacles when they went to the movies. During this period in history most of these films were cheap campy films, where most of the budget went into making them special in order to draw in crowds, these were not cinematic masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination. The cost of showing high quality films in 3D was more than most studios could swing. Film producers weren't getting what they wanted out of the expensive to budget films and eventually they dropped into oblivion.

Suddenly, around 1980 the 3D film started to show up again. The eighties were a big decade for these types of films, followed by an additional sprinkling here and there in the nineties. Finally as the century turned, improved technology made it much more affordable and easier to both create and display these types of films. That life was a still a pretty short one as the technology was eventually forgotten about and allowed to stagnate.

With a little time technology seems to advance tenfold, and this was the very case with 3D film. Just after the turn of the century studios worked to design a method of producing 3D movies that was not only more effective but more affordable, too. The proudest success story of the twenty-first century came with 2009's out-of-this-world success, Avatar. After producers witnessed the kind of success a film like Avatar could bring about, 3D exploded. Instead of being fun anymore 3D became a way for immersing yourself into the film at it was a very well received method, indeed.

Now that 3D film has caught the attention of the casual market practically every movie to come out is shown in 3D for just a few dollars more. A savvy film producer of the 1890's named William Friese-Greene first thought of a way to create this type of film experience. Movie players and video game systems have been updated with 3D capabilities to be enjoyed on the various 3D TV sets now on the market. 3D televisions and ever developing technology promise to present even more amazing illusions into the limelight soon.

The releases of other popular films like Alice in Wonderland, Tron Legacy, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows continued to bring 3D movies to an entirely new generation of spectators. The reborn interest in 3D film is expected to continue to develop into more and more realistic film experiences for movie goers as time goes on.
