Alternative Things To Do In Scotland

Scotland offers the finest scenery to be found in the United Kingdom making it the greatest holiday destination. Countless visitors to Scotland decide upon Edinburgh for their primary destination, while a smaller number decide upon something a little different. The following takes a look at vacations in Scotland and a selection of things to do when in Scotland. The article also examines the Wickerman Festival.

With such an incredibly diverse countryside the range of activities is endless. Mountain climbing is highly popular, as are cycling vacations. The most popular vacations are golf or fishing. With Scotland being the birthplace of golf it is not surprising that you are never too distant from a minimum of one excellent golf course. With the River Tay and the River Spey you almost guaranteed of an incredible time fishing. But what if you want a vacation with a difference?

Increasing numbers of families are choosing music festivals their yearly vacation. Although the vast majority of music festivals are huge with the main aim of making money, you can discover a small number of music festivals geared towards families, such as Tartan Heart and the Wickerman Festival.

The Wickerman Festival is an annual music and arts festival takes place on farm land close to Dundrennan in Dumfries and Galloway approximately 5m away from Kirkcudbright, Scotland. The event celebrates the 1973 cult British film "The Wicker Man" which features Sir Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Ingrid Pitt and Diane Cilento.

The first Wickerman Festival took place in the month of July two thousand and two and was created by local guy, Sid Ambrose. With no experience of organizing an event of such magnitude it is a surprise that it still exists, especially when you think about the current economic climate. Wickerman has slightly changed each year and, like the film, has a cult following.

Wickerman is hugely family friendly it features many child orientated activities including, a mountain biking trek, numerous fairground rides, face painting and workshops. This can be proven easily by make a simple search for photographs of Wickerman Music Festival 2010 or simply pop along to the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.

Near to the festival site is Kirkudbright which was where many of the movies locations can be found for example Harbour Cottage which was used for the bakery and High Street Gallery which was used for the post office and sweetshop. You will discover that there are a great many places of interest in Dumfries and Galloway and it is really worth spending a few days here so that you may visit all of the visitor attractions. Popular destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland is nearly always superb quality and is also very affordable and less costly than staying in a hotel.
