By Deena Lawson

Folk art Chimayo New Mexico is so popular that many people aren't even aware of its official name. This is the name given to traditional Navajo Indian textiles and pottery and paintings. This particular city in the American Southwest is the hub for native American art and can be found in museums and art galleries and sold commercially as well.

Originally this was the location of a hot spring that native Indians claimed had healing powers. When the Spanish conquered this area, they brought Catholicism with them. Not long after, a pious man named Abeyta had a revelation here. He saw a shining light, followed it to its source and was startled to find a crucifix buried in the sand.

Soon after, a religious sanctuary was built there to commemorate the finding of the cross. It is claimed that the soil has healing qualities. Still today people travel from everywhere in the world to find healing at this spot.

Religious paintings done in native art style is the predominant item featured. There are also fine handmade wool blankets in traditional designs. These are of such enduring quality and striking patterns that many people use them for couch throws, wall hangings and other design features. Natural earth colors in red, black, beige and gray are commonly used.

This native art style is also typified by clay pottery in both historic and contemporary Navajo designs. The pottery ranges from clay bowls and platters glazed in earth colors to terra cotta figurines. Another feature is handmade wood carvings and bronzes.

What sets folk art chimayo new mexico apart is not only the fact that it puts such strikingly original decorator items on the market but it also keeps alive a historical style of native art. The native American culture and traditions are kept alive which helps these people take pride in their heritage. In addition, these beautiful handmade items are much sought after by designers and home owners.
