By Annette Bishop

The single biggest flaw with so many comedy play scripts is their lack of essential humor. One or two funny lines does not make the entire finished product funny. Writing humor is not easy for a lot of people. It is not usually come naturally to most, so when you have found something that is truly a laugh it is vital to write it down for later use.

Even if you are a fairly funny person when speaking, writing humor in this format is not going to just happen naturally. When you are speaking you have voice inflection, body language, and facial expressions to back you up. On the page these things will not come through.

If you are serious about learning to write funny material then you can enroll in a class. This will help you hone your natural skills. Acting classes are also a good idea. It shows you how the lines are transferred from the page to the stage.

Regardless of how you go about the learning process, you do need to gather as much information as you can when writing this kind of material. Forcing humor never really works well. It tends to flop. Learning how to let the funny side of your personality naturally flow is a process. If you try to rush or force it, the consequences are usually obvious, and negative.

If you are using comedy play scripts for an actual performance then you will want to purchase those that have been written by a tried and true professional. Trying to present your own material too early can turn out badly. This is a process that you grow into rather than appear with. Allow the time you need to really develop your sense of humor and you will find you may be much more successful.
