What DJ equipment do you need to start a career?

By Antonio M. Thomas

Dreams of becoming a celebrity DJ have probably figured fairly highly on many a teen-aged music-lover's list of future careers at some point. Think of the international travel, inflated salary and international renown and you have probably found the reasons why. There are other options for a budding DJ, although whichever route is taken, it can't be done without the right DJ equipment.

Musical entertainment at private events such as weddings is popular and mobile DJs are able to build their career playing exclusively at these events. They need a music collection to cater for a diverse audience from different generations with different musical tastes. Music is therefore usually from multiple genres, and commercially-successful songs particularly present.

The aim, as always, is to get people up on the dance floor, and so a mobile DJ has to pay attention to the audience and respond to people's reactions. People are not usually at the event just for the music, and enjoy some other kinds of entertainment thrown in, so some mobile DJs expand their DJ equipment to include VDJs and karaoke machines, even though they can be costly.

Club DJs don't necessarily need to haul all this equipment around with them as many venues will have equipment permanently installed.

Club DJs do require more complex technical skills, more so than mobile DJs. Beat matching, mixing and scratching are considered to be the basics. Resident DJs depend upon their reputation to attract crowds of dancers and fans, as does a club DJ if they want to have an international career.

Mobile and club DJs are completely different, and both require completely different DJ equipment and skills. Becoming a club DJ can seem like a much more attractive option, yet competition is stiff and many years of practice are essential for success.
