Customised models of the CDJ 2000 auctioned for charity

By Rachael Jervis

2011 saw Pioneer launch a design competition as part of its Pioneer Art Mix Programme. Pioneer gave twelve DJs, urban artists and designers a brief to use the CDJ 2000 as a blank canvas, and to redesign it to reflect their personalities and lifestyles. Some, not all, decks remained fully functional after their transformation, and all were autographed by their creators.

Designs included a LEGO version of the CDJ, where the buttons and the scratch wheel were replaced by LEGO bricks and plates. Others were splattered with paint, or covered in graffiti or comic strip graphics. One even had a keyboard and guitar necks added to the decks.

The doctored versions of the CDJ 2000, signed by the artists, were then sold online to the highest bidders in in an auction which ended on August 23rd. This offered members of the public the opportunity to own an autographed, unique, possibly functioning work of art. The auction raised $13,000, one hundred per cent of which is destined for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

The foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which was launched in 1997 by the VH1 network. The inspiration for the organisation was born out of the then head of the network's experience at a New York school. He realised that schools were struggling to provide adequate music teaching and that children could benefit greatly from having greater access to musical instruction.

From the beginning, the core goal of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation was, and still is, to ensure that each school child can access instrumental music education programmes.

Customised versions of the CDJ 2000 have been used to raise awareness of the foundation and its work as part of the Pioneer Art Mix Programme. These digital multi-media decks appeared for the first time around fifteen years ago, and heralded a move away from vinyl and the embracing of digital music in live music mixes.
