The Best Female Soul Singers Of All Time

By Ladonna Franklin

In both the past and in today's world, there are a number of female soul singers who cannot be forgotten for the contributions they have made. Their music has touched the lives of people across the world, whether they have careers that have lasted decades or just a few years. All in all, their voices will always be remembered as some of the best to ever have existed.

One of the greatest, if not the greatest, singer in this category to have ever existed is Aretha Franklin. At seventy years old, Aretha Franklin's music career has lasted a lifetime. She is not stopping, however, and still records to this day. Her number one song Respect is recognized across the globe, having been used numerous times for the silver and small screen.

In her career, Aretha Franklin has received twenty Grammy awards. She has been given the title of the Queen of Soul. With forty-five entries in the billboard charts top 100, she has had twenty number one hits. She is also the first woman that was inducted into the legendary Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Gladys Knight of Gladys Knight and the Pips is quite possibly next in line for the title of queen. In fact, she is known as the Empress of Soul. As part of the opening act for songstress Diana Ross and her group the Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips were actually removed from the tour because they were garnering more audience response and support than the main act. Their success has been immeasurable.

Gladys Knight's greatest hit is the song Midnight Train To Georgia. This song truly showcases her vocal ability. She is also a part of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. As part of the Pips, she has won 3 Grammy awards, while as a solo artist, she has won 4 of her own.

Etta James is a woman with a legendary voice. She is known for the sultry and soulful song entitled At Last. Her music includes the blues, gospel, jazz, soul and rock and roll genres. She passed away in January of 2012 as a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame member, having won 4 Grammies and 17 Blues Music Awards during her lifetime.

Sade is the singer with the smoky voice that is known around the globe. Famous for songs like Smooth Operator in the mid-eighties, Sade's music cannot be mistaken. Her music contains hints of jazz.

Robert Flack, Patti LaBelle and Shirley Bassey are just a few more of the female soul singers who need to be mentioned for their work, as well as Tina Turner, who holds the title of Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. These women have had more than successful careers that have practically lasted a lifetime and, for many, are still ongoing. Singers of modern times who need to mentioned for the soulful vibes they bring to their music are Adele, Alicia Keys and Nora Jones. All of these women are award-winning songstresses who hold highly respected positions in the world of music for their contributions.
