What is The Friends TV Show All About?

By Elinor Hsieh

Airing between September 22nd 1994, and May 6th 2004, the Friends TV show became a cult classic. By the time the show ended it's ten year cycle, more than fifty-two million viewers were tuning in each episode. After more than two hundred and thirty individual screenings, ten full seasons had been edited for television.

The final episode of Friends attracted the most viewers of any episode over its ten year period, confirming the episode as the fourth most watched finale on television. When the show finally came to a close, it remained ranked in the top ten television shows for a full week, and it is still considered to be one of the top television sitcoms in history.

The Friends show highlighted the lifestyles of a group of friends who lived in Manhattan. Each episode was filmed at the Warner Brothers Studio, in front of an appreciative live audience. During its time on air, the show was nominated for an unprecedented sixty-three Primetime Emmy Awards. As with a lot of very successful shows, a spin-off was created, called "Joey".

The show would go to air every Thursday, for those who have not seen the show during it's ten year stint on television. Friends was able to captivate its audience with laughter, sadness, and this meant that people would relive the previous nights show the following day, with their own friends, and work colleagues.

As with any show with this much appeal, of the six main characters that played their respective roles, there would always be reasons to love and hate them. Two of the main characters, Rachel Green and Monica Geller, were always the best of friends. These two characters were played by Jennifer Aniston, and Courtney Cox. Monica was known as the Mother hen to the whole group of friends, and Rachel was a fashion enthusiast. The other female in the group was Phoebe Buffay, played by Lisa Kudrow, and she was an eccentric self taught musician, and masseuse.

David Schwimmer played the part of Ross Geller, Monica's loving and protective brother. Ross was a palaeontologist working at the museum. One of the most popular and recognized characters was Joey, somewhat of a womanizer. and played by Matt Le Blanc. Our last character, Chandler Bing, marries Monica in the seventh series, played by Matthew Perry.

Seven years on, the show is still being aired as reruns, and the DVD collection is available for people who enjoy watching episodes over and over. Friends was known to be responsible for a massive cultural impact. As an example of this, the Central Perk Coffee House has in fact inspired so many other coffee houses around the world.
