A Comparison Between The Beatles And Lady Gaga

By Jack Wogan

It is not always easy to change the world, but you can look up to those who can and to those who do. The power of art can influence our lives whether it is poetry, sculpture, painting or singing. When artists manage to do things in a better and different way than those before her/him then you get movements like the cubism in the 1900's or the flower power in the early 1960's.

Two important names like Lady Gaga and the Beatles share their common desire to change something and to be spokespeople for the many. Their main mean to do that is by bringing something innovative, by underlining and combining musical influences which weren't used in common music. It is a fact that their music sound great, but the contemporary singers are definitely favored by the guitar effects pedal which can create more interesting sounds nowadays.

The 1960's were a period characterized by the word "revolution". It was a time when changes were needed, when things couldn't continue as they were on the political level , at the level of women rights and in the field of interracial relationships. There was a painful need to love and to be free and happy which violently contradicted the traditional education. The fact that they managed to capture in their songs all these tensions brought the Beatles the fame they enjoyed and the echo they still have.

There are similar issues nowadays, although fifty years separate the two. In the present times, the world deals with an ongoing struggle for women equality and one for freedom of sexual choice; there are religious issues and there is a critical need for individual freedom. Despite her Catholic education Lady Gaga doesn't miss any occasion to name problems as they are, even if this is done by means of blasphemy or a shocking approach.

A thing the two have in common is the manner of choosing their name. The band name the Beatles is a tribute to Buddy Holly, one of the musical idols of the boys from Liverpool. The inspiration for the name Lady Gaga came from one of the songs of the Queen, a rock band who inspired and influenced Lady Gaga.

The Beatles and Lady Gaga are both phenomena in their own time. However it becomes rather difficult to understand the impact of the Beatles in the present days, if you don't study thoroughly the social, the political and the musical situation to which they could be related. That is how we could understand that their impact was tremendous, and that they brought a completely new sound and attractive messages. Lady Gaga placed in the contemporary context fascinates the audience. She can make people fall in love with her style, although she expresses her art in a manner meant to shock.
