Encore For High School Musical

By James Pynn

Once again it's the perfect time to re-enter that vivid Disneyworld of music, dance moves, and high school. It is time to bring on the sound and fury and never-waning smiles and get your sights set on High School Musical: Encore Edition. It's time to welcome back Troy, Gabriella, Chad, Taylor, and Kelsi. Ready your face for non-stop smiling and your eyes for all that intense Disney sheen.

Undoubtedly, the entire world has seen the glory of High School Musical and instead of the series drifting down into a virtual no-man's-land, it has managed to stay afloat in the great tween tributary. Is it possible to blame today's tweens? There's hunky, but cute Zac Efron and sultry, but smart Vanessa Hudgens. Then there are some other supporting players you'll never take into consideration. Anyway, the point is: it's a fun show and this DVD edition manages to give all that glitters and then some.

What's the story plot about? Well, ask the tween in your own family or the one living round the corner. Everyone between the ages of twelve and twenty has seen this and can fill you in. Without a doubt, chances are high they won't remember as the colors and dancing and smiling will have robbed them of their ability to recall much. It's like getting a muzzle full of laughing gas. You can't quite recall what actually transpired for an hour and a half.

I believe this one has something to do with one of the teenagers getting a scholarship to Julliard, but that could well be the plot of the last film in the series. It's hard to tell them all apart and really, you're not watching for plot or story. You're watching to forget. Inevitably, forces scheme to keep Efron and Hudgens apart and they get together by dancing and singing.

Laugh if you would like to, but once you sit through a sequence of Kenny Ortega's dance choreography, you will be sold. As a matter of fact, you might be tempted to get an Ortega tattoo on your arm. The man has brought the musical back to life and re-introduced it to the next generation of Americans. It's a safe movie you can watch with the whole family. More than that, it's totally fun.
