Review Of Despicable Me 3-D Cartoon

By Celina Ortiz

As the title states Despicable Me is a 3-D cartoon movie that shows the value and importance of family and loving relationships through the story of an evil villain who starts off as a rather terrible person but begins to transform through the power of people. In this rather comedic story, a super villain named Gru learns of the stealing of the Pyramids of Giza. Perfectly aware of the fact that this was probably executed by one of his evil colleagues, in order to get that extra edge he resolves to steal the moon. How could anyone do better than that? In order to see this plan through however, he needs to get a loan from the Bank of Evil. When he is refused, he is required to fulfill certain obligations in order to get the loan. What else goes wrong? Well, the villain also adopts three girls and as he goes about his plan he starts to realize that maybe his goals aren't all they're cracked up to be.

-Good And Bad

There are a lot of good things to say about this film. The concept used in the plot is actually quite refreshing when you take the time to do some analysis. The use of the anti-hero was a very interesting twist. Although most viewers cannot imagine living solely to make others unhappy, people are able to feel for him because he is dealing with issues that just about everyone has to contend with at some point or another. Being outdone by a younger coworker, trying to get a loan from the bank, attempting to get approval from a parent, and even trying to work at home while kids are running about.

Even though Gru isn't a villain so much as an anti-hero (or maybe unsympathetic hero?) and his life revolves around evil, his attempts to reach his goals are things that people know only too well. The movie does a great job in showing how people and healthy relationships can change a person for the good.

-Character Development

This is a cartoon so you can't expect profound and developed characters, but this movie does a nice of job of promoting growth in the characters viewers see the most of. Gru is changed from a villain into a caring father to these orphan girls, you see more of the background in his relationship with his mother, and there's also the evolution of the girls themselves to enjoy.

It is also interesting to see that Vector and Perkins are two characters that although not doing much in the way of growth, they have a father-son relationship that can make for some fun analysis when compared to what you see between Gru and his mother.

This movie isn't going to be nominated as a fantastic work of art, but as far as fun movies that you can enjoy this has got to be on your list. If you're taking the kids out for an evening and want to see a movie that will entertain them and you, Despicable Me is a great choice for the entire family. You'll be able to relate to the situations Gru finds himself in and you'll enjoy yourself immensely as you watch a film that talks about the importance of having love and acceptance from the people you care about. The plot is pretty entertaining and the acting leaves nothing to be desired. If you're looking for a good movie, check this one out.
