There are four essential characters in the Rocky Horror Picture Show - Magenta, Columbia, Riff-Raff and, of course, Frank-N-Furter. Sure, there are many other character in this movie/musical but these are the four most popular and the four that come to mind immediately when discussing the show. These characters also have their own pre-made Rocky Horror Picture Show costumes that can be bought. Here are my thoughts on the two costumes for the female characters, Magenta and Columbia.
A very colorful and very strange character indeed. I suppose Columbia is really no more or less bizarre than the other main and supporting character in the show. For me the tap dancer outfit just sticks out. Make this a morbid couples costume by having your boyfriend dress up as the Eddie character. May seem a bit strange but we care talking about Rocky Horror Picture Show Costumes here.
I attend Rocky shows with friends all the time and the one thing about the Columbia costume that sticks out in my hand is that it's a costume that works great when you add your own personal touch to it. Switch out the hat for an actual top hat and color it gold.
This leads me to Magenta and something similar struck me when a friend of mine dressed up as her one year. The person that effectively pulls off this costume is someone who adds their own personal touch to it as well. This is a very, very simple costume to make so you want to make sure you stand out as opposed to blending in. Take the basic elements of the outfit and craft your own style based on something in the movie.
I had a friend who took the basic Magenta outfit, picked her favorite scene from the film and model the design after that scene. It was the best decision she could make as far as I was concerned. Do something similar and you can pull this off quite nicely.
