He has decided to eradicate his creation, and instead of a flood he is sending an army of death dealing angels to do the job.
The audience learns that the hope of mankind really rests in the birth of one child. This child is sort of the product of a miracle in its own right, and it is also the child that happens to be growing inside of Charlie. The angels have come with the purpose of killing the child, because if it is born than mankind can be saved. There are a group of people that find themselves pent up in Bob's (Dennis Quaid) gas station/auto shop/restaurant fending off the end of the world together.
Michael is one of those people, with the sole purpose of protecting the child that is growing inside of Charlie. He knows that the hope of mankind is this child and he will stop at nothing to ensure that come hell or high water nothing will harm it.
